A CREATURE COSTUME TO PROMOTE DERRN BROWN'S NEW GHOST TRAIN AT THORPE PARK

Derren Brown: Monster

I joined the team making the costume part-way through the process. The skull and face were already defined – a fibreglass skull cap had a polyurethane cast stretched over the top, and the actors head was covered by a cowl. The body was mostly made with plastozote. I came into the team with the job of applying polyurethane to the costume, which involved mixing up very small batches, and applying it by hand. As it was going tacky, we would add texture by pressing in reticulated foam, to give a reptile-like skin effect. The feet were separate polyurethane foam casts out of a vinylmould. The costume also had some fur effect and individually punched hairs, party to cover joints, but also to add a sense of alien-like menace.
